Our History

1986

Passport Unlimited is founded by Roger Blier and Richard Mueller, two childhood friends. These are exciting times as the company purchases their first building and hires their first employee!

In this year, Steve Esau joins the company as the third and final partner, rounding out the trio of owners still at the helm today. Passport’s focus is in Western Washington, working primarily in Seattle and its suburbs.

1989

As the company grows, this year marks the first year that revenue exceeded $1,000,000 – a meaningful milestone in the company’s expansion! This expansion also means that the company is stretching its legs in other markets, and this year brings the addition of Spokane as a major market of focus.

1990

Moving south, the company soon opens a new market in Portland, expanding over the river to Vancouver as well.

1991

In this year, Passport expands to the City of Trees, Boise, opening yet another new market.

1992

Another year of rapid growth brings a move to California, where the Bay Area market is a focus.

1998

After more than ten years in the greater Seattle market, Passport signs their first corporation, who offers the program to employees as a benefit of employment. Microsoft begins distributing Passport memberships to all employees in this year.

2000

After outgrowing their original digs, Passport moves to a newly expanded office space in the Houghton area of Kirkland, Washington.

2002

This year brings an innovation in product, with the advent of a new product line, marketed and sold directly to real estate agents and mortgage lenders. These business professionals gift Passport Cards to their best clients and referrals as a tool to build their business.

2003

This year brings another new product, when Verity Credit Union approached Passport about using their product as a loyalty and retention tool for their members. Passport and Verity launch the first co-branded credit card in this year, marking the first time the Passport benefits are used by a financial institution.

2005

Things were heating up as Passport made a move to the desert this year, beginning content acquisition in the greater Phoenix/Scottdale market. Phoenix marked the fifth major metropolitan market for Passport.

In this year, Passport also adds an new corporate partner, inking an agreement with Hewlett-Packard to distribute cards to their employees.

2007

Passport added another anchor client this year, announcing in early Spring that they would launch a corporate program with Apple, offering each Apple employee a Passport Card as a benefit of employment.

2008

This year marked expansion to a new market in Southern California, San Diego. The Passport team works hard to launch this new market, bringing great restaurants and deals to this new city.

2010

Another Credit Union partner joins the fold in this year, this time with the addition of STCU in Spokane, WA as Passport’s newest financial institution partner.

2014

Continuing to evolve and change with the times, Passport launches a mobile membership in this year, meaning Passport members could now enjoy all the benefit of their plastic card, right from their smart phone.

2016

Bellevue, WA based T-Mobile joins the Passport program this year, offering memberships to their employees nationwide.

2018

Passport was pleased to announce their partnership with BECU Credit Union, based in Tukwila, WA in this year. As the fourth largest credit union in the country by asset size, BECU represents a targeted and strategic growth opportunity for Passport.

2019

Passport’s gone global! This year marks the first international expansion for the company, as Passport launches programs in the UK and numerous other international cities.
